Global Strategy and Leadership study notes, flashcards and cheat sheet on a desk.2026 edition

About the subject

What Global Strategy and Leadership covers

Global Strategy and Leadership is the capstone of the CPA Program. This study guide covers how strategy is analysed, chosen, implemented and led: the external and internal environment, product and market choices, the strategic plan, and leading it.

The exam mixes multiple choice with extended response, built around case studies. You have to take a framework, five forces, the generic strategies, the international strategy types, and apply it to a business you have never seen before, which is where most marks are won or lost. The notes are built for that: the frameworks and the wording first, then how to use them in the exam.

The subject splits into seven modules. The notes match the exam, so your study time follows the marks.

What's inside

Everything tested, nothing padded

Three parts that work together. Learn it in the notes, drill it with the exam, lock it in with the cards.

Condensed notes

58 pages across seven modules

The whole subject rewritten in plain English, the way a colleague who passed last year would explain it.

  • Every examinable topic, in order
  • Tips and traps flag where marks are lost
  • Tables and worked examples, not walls of text
Practice exam

A full 121-mark paper

Fifty-one multiple choice and seven extended-response questions, built around real scenarios and written for an open-book exam.

Recall tools

62 flashcards and a cheat sheet

The last-week toolkit. Quick recall on the go, and one quick reference sheet for the open-book exam.

  • 62 print-and-cut flashcards
  • 2-page cheat sheet, the core of what's examined
  • Sized for phone or paper

A look inside

Real pages, not a promise

This is the actual work, not a description of it. Genuine pieces from the notes, flashcards, cheat sheet and exam, so you can see the quality before you spend a cent. It is a taste. The full pack goes a lot deeper.

From the cheat sheet

Every definition, done properly

Definition

A decision is strategic when it sets long-term direction, commits major resources, is hard to reverse, and affects the whole organisation. An operational decision is short-term, low in cost and easily changed.

The exact wording to use, pulled out so you cannot miss it.

From the cheat sheet

Porter's generic strategies, in one glance

Cost leadership. compete as the lowest-cost producer.
Differentiation. offer something distinctive buyers will pay more for.
Focus. serve a narrow segment, by either cost or differentiation.

The examinable frameworks, laid out for fast lookup in the open-book exam.

From the cheat sheet

Five forces, in the order to work them

  • Threat of new entrants (low when barriers to entry are high)
  • Supplier power (high when suppliers are few and switching is costly)
  • Buyer power (high when buyers are large or concentrated)
  • Threat of substitutes (other products meeting the same need)
  • Rivalry among existing competitors

Conclude with a judgment on industry attractiveness, not a bare list of ratings. That is where the marks are.

From the flashcards

62 cards that make recall automatic

Front

Name the three levels of strategy.

Back

Corporate strategy, which businesses or markets the organisation should be in; business strategy, how each business competes in its market; and functional strategy, how each function, such as finance or marketing, supports the business strategy.

Print double-sided, cut, and drill them anywhere.

From the cheat sheet

The industry life cycle, stage by stage

StageWhat marks it
IntroductionSlow sales, few rivals
GrowthFast sales, new entrants
MaturitySlow growth, saturated, price competition

Plus decline. Four stages that place any industry the exam describes.

From the flashcards

The classic trap, named

Stuck in the middle

Porter's term for a firm that tries to be both the cost leader and the differentiator at once and achieves neither. It has no clear basis on which to compete, so it tends to earn lower returns than rivals that commit to one generic strategy.

The notes flag the ideas the examiner uses to build wrong answers.

From the notes

Leadership theories, kept apart

Watch for

Transactional leadership leads through clear tasks, targets and rewards or penalties for results. Transformational leadership lifts commitment through a shared vision, trust and personal development. A change scenario is usually pointing at the second.

The distinctions that decide multiple-choice marks, made explicit.

From the practice exam

A full mock, marked like the real exam

Question 6 • Module 1

A consumer-goods firm sells one largely standardised product worldwide and runs tightly centralised operations to win on scale, with little adaptation to local tastes. Using the international strategy types, this is best described as:

  • A. A multidomestic strategy
  • D. A global strategyAnswer

Fifty-one multiple choice and seven extended response, every one worked through.

Worked solution

Every answer explained, right and wrong

Why D is correct

A global strategy pursues high global integration and low local responsiveness: one largely standardised offer worldwide, run centrally to win on scale, which matches the firm here. The four types sit on the integration-versus-responsiveness trade-off associated with Bartlett and Ghoshal.

Why the others are wrong

A multidomestic strategy adapts heavily to each country, the opposite of standardising worldwide. A transnational strategy seeks both integration and local adaptation at once, not low responsiveness. An export strategy sells from home rather than running centralised worldwide operations.

Every question is marked up like this. The seven extended-response questions come with a model answer and the marking guide, so you can see exactly where the marks sit.
