What this subject is really about

This subject walks the whole audit: planning it, performing the tests, and finalising the opinion. It leans hard on judgement and professional scepticism, which is what the exam is really testing.

The notes are built around the decisions an auditor actually makes, from assessing risk to choosing a response and forming the opinion. A 22-page study guide sits alongside them for the last week before the exam.

The syllabus

The three chapters, and what each covers

The subject follows the shape of a real audit, from planning to opinion. Here is the whole scope before you enrol.

1

Plan the audit

Understanding the entity, assessing risk and building the plan.

  • Audit overview
  • Quality and pre-engagement
  • Risk assessment
  • The audit plan
  • Internal controls
2

Perform the audit

Gathering evidence through controls and substantive work.

  • Tests of controls
  • Substantive testing
  • Data analytics
  • Key audit areas
  • Using the work of others
3

Finalise the audit

Completing the file and forming the opinion.

  • Completing the audit
  • The audit opinion
  • The auditor's report
Your toolkit

The standards you'll use

Almost every question turns on one of these standards and on the audit risk model that ties them together.

ISA 315 / ASA 315

Understanding the entity and assessing the risk of material misstatement.

ISA 320 / ASA 320

Materiality in planning and performing the audit.

ISA 330 / ASA 330

The auditor's responses to assessed risks.

ISA 240 / ASA 240

The auditor's responsibilities relating to fraud.

ISA 300 / ASA 300

Planning the audit.

ISA 550, 250 and 265

Related parties, laws and regulations, and communicating control deficiencies.

These references reflect the subject as at the start of 2026. Standards and law change, so confirm the current set against your subject materials before you rely on it.

What you're marked on

How it's assessed

A written submission, a final invigilated exam that is the hurdle, and a compulsory virtual workshop.

Written

Submission

An audit scenario analysis, marked on judgement and scepticism rather than recall.

Exam

Final, the hurdle

Sat online at the end. You must pass this on its own to pass the subject.

Workshop

Compulsory

A virtual workshop is built into the subject, so preparation matters.

Where students lose marks

The traps worth knowing before the exam

These are the mistakes markers see most often in audit answers. Judgement is what earns the marks.

Where marks slip

The audit risk model is a way of thinking, not a calculation. The marks are for linking a higher assessed risk to a stronger, better response, not for multiplying percentages.

Where marks slip

Clearly trivial is not the same as immaterial. Confusing the two, or forgetting the buffer for aggregation, is a common error.

Where marks slip

A control deviation found in testing changes your assessment of control risk and the work that follows. Do not record it and move on.

Where marks slip

A misstatement found in a sample stands for the whole population, so it must be projected before you decide whether it matters.

Where marks slip

Name a risk, then link it to a specific assertion and a response. A risk with no assertion and no response is hard to award marks for.

Where marks slip

Keep professional scepticism visible. Estimates and areas open to management bias are where the marks and the risk both sit.

A worked example

The kind of question you'll face

A short scenario from the practice exam, so you can see what audit judgement looks like on paper.

Wattlebird Ltd recognises revenue on long-term construction contracts using estimates of the stage of completion. Those estimates require significant judgement and are open to management bias. How should the auditor treat the risk of material misstatement in this revenue?

What it tests

Identifying a significant risk in an estimate open to bias, linking it to the relevant assertions, and designing a response with the scepticism the standards expect.

In the pack

The full worked solution sets out the risk, the assertions and a proportionate response, with the marks laid out so you can see how a strong answer is built.

Study method

How to study it around a full-time job

The subject runs over roughly nine weeks and includes a workshop. Here is a plan that fits it around work.

Weeks 1 to 3

Planning and risk

Chapter 1. Get the risk assessment and materiality solid, because they drive everything that follows.

Weeks 4 to 6

Evidence and testing

Chapter 2. Controls, substantive work and the key audit areas. Practise linking risks to responses.

Weeks 7 to 8

Finalising and the opinion

Chapter 3, plus full papers. Work through how the evidence leads to the report.

Workshop

Do the prep

The compulsory workshop rewards preparation, and it is hard to catch up on the day.

Exam week

Papers and the study guide

Sit the practice exam under time and run the 22-page study guide rather than the full notes.

Condensed notes

Plain English, exam ready

The whole audit rewritten to be read fast. Here is the heart of risk assessment, as it appears in the notes.

Chapter 1 ยท risk

The audit risk model

Audit risk is the risk of material misstatement combined with detection risk. It is a way of thinking about where the danger sits, so a higher assessed risk calls for a stronger response, not a number to multiply out.

Study guide

A 22-page companion

A condensed version of the notes for the last week, when you want the shape of the subject, not the detail.

  • The subject cut to its spine
  • Built for final-week revision
  • Sits alongside the full notes
Cheat sheet

The subject on six pages

  • Reasonable assurance is high, but not absolute
  • Audit risk = risk of material misstatement + detection risk
  • Higher assessed risk -> stronger, more targeted response
  • Project a sample misstatement to the whole population
Practice exam and worked solutions

Sat under time, marked like the real thing

A full paper that mirrors the exam, with worked answers showing where each mark is won.

  • Full practice exam
  • Scenario-led audit judgement
  • 29 pages of worked solutions
  • Marks shown so you can see a strong answer

Common questions

Is audit a memory subject?

No. It is a judgement subject. The marks are for assessing risk and choosing a proportionate response, so it rewards practice on scenarios over rote learning.

Why a study guide instead of flashcards?

Audit answers are about judgement, not one-line recall. The 22-page study guide condenses the subject for the last week, which suits the way it is examined.

Is it all exams?

No. A written submission, a final invigilated exam that is the hurdle, and a compulsory virtual workshop.

Are these notes affiliated with the program?

No. Summo Notes is an independent study resource and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any professional body.

What is in the pack?

One full subject pack: 34-page condensed notes across the three chapters, 22-page study guide for final-week revision, 6-page cheat sheet, full practice exam and 29 pages of worked solutions.

How do I get it, and what format is it in?

Everything is a PDF you download straight after checkout, so you can start the same day. It reads well on a laptop, tablet or printed out, and the cheat sheet is made for fast lookup.

What does it cost?

$95 AUD, as a single one-off payment for the whole subject. There is no subscription and no per-chapter pricing.
