Digital Finance study notes, flashcards and cheat sheet on a desk.2026 edition

About the subject

What Digital Finance covers

Digital Finance is an elective in the CPA Program. This study guide covers how technology is changing finance: the digital ecosystem, the future of money, automation and AI, data analytics, and the risks and regulation that come with all of it.

The exam is all multiple choice, and most questions are built around a business scenario. You have to take an idea, a payment rail, a form of digital money, an automation tool, and apply it to facts you have never seen before, which is where most marks are won or lost. The notes are built for that: the ideas and the wording first, then how to use them in the exam.

The subject splits into five modules. The notes match the exam, so the parts worth the most marks, like data analytics, get the most of your time.

What's inside

Everything tested, nothing padded

Three parts that work together. Learn it in the notes, drill it with the exam, lock it in with the cards.

Condensed notes

45 pages across five modules

The whole subject rewritten in plain English, the way a colleague who passed last year would explain it.

  • Every examinable topic, in order
  • Tips and traps flag where marks are lost
  • Tables and worked examples, not walls of text
Practice exam

A 50-question paper, plus extra practice

Fifty multiple-choice questions matching the real all-multiple-choice format, plus five extended-response questions for extra practice, all written for an open-book exam.

  • Worked solutions explain right and wrong
  • Five extended-response questions as extra practice
  • Sit it timed, then check your working
Recall tools

60 flashcards and a cheat sheet

  • Sized for phone or paper

A look inside

Real pages, not a promise

This is the actual work, not a description of it. Genuine pieces from the notes, flashcards, cheat sheet and exam, so you can see the quality before you spend a cent. It is a taste. The full pack goes a lot deeper.

From the notes

The one idea the subject runs on

Must know

The engine of digital finance is cheap, near-real-time data flowing across connected devices, joined up by cloud computing and APIs. Almost every later idea, from digital money to analytics to new risks, follows from that one change.

The exact framing to use, pulled out so you cannot miss it.

From the notes

Coin, token and DeFi, told apart

A coin. has its own blockchain.
A token. is built on someone else's.
DeFi. provides financial services through smart contracts with no intermediary.

Three one-liners that settle a whole family of questions.

From the flashcards

60 cards that make recall automatic

Front

Define digital finance.

Back

The delivery of financial services, such as payments, lending, saving, investing and advice, through digital technology and data, rather than through branches and paper. It changes how customers are served, not just the speed of one team's work.

Print double-sided, cut, and drill them anywhere.

From the notes

RPA against machine learning, in one line

RPA. follows fixed rules; it does not learn and does not make judgements.
Machine learning and AI. spot patterns, cope with new situations, and handle exceptions.

If a scenario needs the tool to learn, RPA alone is the wrong answer.

From the notes

The traps that cost marks, flagged in advance

Exam trap

A CBDC is not a cryptocurrency. It is issued by the central bank, backed by the state, and stable in value, which is the opposite of a decentralised, unbacked, volatile cryptocurrency. If a question blurs the two, the difference in issuer and backing is the point being tested.

Tips and traps sit right where people slip, so you learn the mistake before you make it.

From the notes

Ledger and blockchain, kept apart

Exam trap

Distributed ledger and blockchain are not the same thing. A distributed ledger is the general idea of a shared, synchronised record with no central administrator. A blockchain is one kind of distributed ledger, the kind that chains blocks with hashes.

The notes flag the ideas the examiner uses to build wrong answers.

From the notes

The second-order point that earns the mark

Exam trap

Do not treat a faster payment as only a convenience. A digital payment also produces rich transaction data, which carries both value, in analytics and fraud detection, and obligations, in privacy and security. Name both sides.

The notes tell you how the marks are awarded, not just what the topic is.

From the practice exam

A full mock, marked like the real exam

Question 12 • Module 2

A committee compares three forms of digital money: a central bank digital currency, a cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin, and a stablecoin. Which statement correctly distinguishes them by issuer and backing?

  • B. All three are decentralised and have no issuer
  • C. A CBDC is issued by a central bank, a cryptocurrency is decentralised with no central issuer, and a stablecoin is privately issued and backed by a reserveAnswer

Fifty questions matching the real format, plus five extended-response questions for extra practice.

Worked solution

Every answer explained, right and wrong

Why C is correct

A central bank digital currency is a digital form of state money issued by the central bank; a cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin is decentralised, with no central issuer and no backing; a stablecoin is privately issued and tries to hold a steady value, usually by being backed by a reserve of assets. The differences in issuer and backing are the point to fix.

Why the others are wrong

A cryptocurrency has no central-bank issuer and is not backed by gold, so the first claim does not hold for all three. A central bank digital currency and a stablecoin both have issuers, so they are not all decentralised. And the last option reverses the labels.

Every question is marked up like this, including why each distractor is wrong, so you learn why you missed it, not just that you did.
