What this subject is really about
This subject covers the risk management process end to end, the governance around it, and the technology, data and AI that now sit behind reporting and decisions. It runs into sustainability disclosure as well.
It is assessed by written work rather than a timed exam, so the practice materials are built around full cases with model responses and marking rubrics. The skill it tests is structured written analysis, not recall.
The four chapters, and what each covers
The subject moves from the risk process to governance, then to the technology and AI reshaping the work. Here is the whole scope before you enrol.
Risk management
The framework and process, from scope to reporting.
- The risk process
- Identifying risk
- Analysing and evaluating
- Treatment
- Monitoring and reporting
Governance and external reporting
How risk is governed and disclosed.
- Sustainability-related disclosures
- Governance and risk disclosures
Technology as a strategic enabler
The technology behind modern reporting.
- Automation
- Blockchain
- IT infrastructure
- Data analytics
Artificial intelligence
AI concepts, risks and governance.
- AI concepts
- AI risks
- Governing AI
The frameworks and standards you'll use
The subject sits on a recognised risk framework and the newer disclosure standards, with technology and AI running through both.
The risk management framework and process, treating risk as the effect of uncertainty on objectives.
How risk is governed, and how it is reported to those who need it.
The sustainability-related financial disclosures and the governance behind them.
Automation, blockchain, IT infrastructure and data analytics in reporting.
The concepts, the risks, and how AI is governed in a finance function.
These references reflect the subject as at the start of 2026. Standards and law change, so confirm the current set against your subject materials before you rely on it.
How it's assessed
This subject has no final exam. It is assessed by two written submissions, and the second is the hurdle.
First submission
A written case response on the risks facing an organisation.
Second submission, the hurdle
A longer written analysis you must pass on its own to pass the subject.
Written throughout
Because the marks are in your writing, the practice pack is full cases with model responses and rubrics.
The traps worth knowing before the assessment
These are the mistakes markers see most often in written risk answers. Structure and specificity earn the marks.
Treating risk as only a threat. Risk is the effect of uncertainty on objectives, and that effect can be positive, so the subject speaks of risks and opportunities together.
Listing risks as bare labels such as cyber or exchange rate. A label cannot be analysed. Describe the cause, the event and the effect before you assess it.
Jumping to a treatment before you have analysed and evaluated the risk. The marks follow the process, so skipping steps skips marks.
Writing about technology in the abstract. Tie automation, data or AI to a specific decision or control, or the point is lost.
Describing a disclosure without saying who governs it and why it matters. Governance is part of the answer, not a footnote.
Leaving the writing unstructured. In a written subject, a clear structure with headings and a recommendation is worth real marks.
The kind of question you'll face
The pack is built around full cases rather than a timed paper, so here is what a case looks like.
Practice case A hands you an organisation facing a set of risks and asks for a written analysis: identify and analyse the risks and opportunities, evaluate them, and recommend a response, in the structure a marker expects.
Working the risk process in writing, from a described cause and event through to a governed, specific recommendation, rather than a list of labels.
The case comes with a full model response and a marking rubric, so you can see exactly what a strong written answer looks like and where the marks sit.
How to study it around a full-time job
The subject is written throughout, so the plan is about building writing technique, not exam speed.
The risk process
Chapter 1. Learn the process cold, because every case answer follows it.
Governance and disclosure
Chapter 2. Connect risk to how it is governed and reported.
Technology and AI
Chapters 3 and 4. Tie each to a real decision or control.
Write, then compare
Draft each submission, then read it against the model responses and rubrics before you finalise.
Structure and specifics
Check the structure, and swap every bare label for a described cause, event and effect.

Plain English, exam ready
The whole subject rewritten to be read fast. Here is how risk is defined, as it appears in the notes.
Risk is not only a threat
Risk is the effect of uncertainty on objectives. That effect can be negative, a threat, or positive, an opportunity, which is why the subject speaks of risks and opportunities together and marks answers that treat both.
Two full practice cases
Built to mirror the two written assessments, each with a model answer to learn from.
The assessable spine on a few pages
For fast lookup while you write, beside the notes and the cases.
16 pages of shorter exercises
The warm-up before the full cases, to build the technique first.
Common questions
Is there an exam?
No. This subject is assessed by two written submissions, and the second is the hurdle. That is why the pack is built around cases, not a timed paper.
Why no flashcards?
Recall drills do not help much in a written subject. The pack gives you cases, model responses and a workbook, which is what actually builds the marks.
What makes a strong answer?
Structure, and specificity. Work the risk process, describe each risk properly, and tie technology to a real decision. The model responses show the standard.
